What is air cargo's role in terms of CO2 emissions?
Here are some facts & figures.
CO2 and Transport
The air transport sector (passenger and air cargo) is accountable for 2% to 3% of total man-made CO2 emissions. Air cargo in particular generates between 0.3% and 0.6% of all global carbon emissions, while cargo shipped by air represents 35% of the total annual value of export trade in manufactured goods. The complete transport sector – including private transport, trucking and shipping by sea – is often estimated to produce around 23% to 25% of total man-made CO2 emissions.
Transport Modes
This graph shows the distance that can be travelled with 1 tonne of cargo, using 1Kwh energy for different transport modes.
Our CO2 Emissions
At AIR FRANCE KLM, long-haul passenger flights account for 68% of all CO2 emissions, while ground operations are only accountable for 1%. Our freighter fleet emits 9% of all CO2 emissions for AIR FRANCE KLM.
Freighter Type
A fuel-efficient fleet is still the most effective way to reduce CO2 emission. AF-KL Cargo owns the youngest and therefore the most fuel-efficient and environmental-friendly fleet.
