Action Roadmap To Going Paperless

Step 1 : Join the IATA Multilateral e-AWB Agreement.

This agreement covers the terms and conditions found on the reverse side of traditional paper AWBs between you and IATA. It takes about few minutes. For more details, see and sign on IATA website : https://www.formstack.com/forms/iata-multilateral

Step 2 : Transmit electronic Airway Bill/House Airway Bill data (FWB/FHL).

There are different ways to send a FWB:

  • CPS: Air France KLM offers to the customer the possibility to use CPS (Cargo Portal Services). It is a free web portal that will allow you to do your e- Booking and e-AWB/ e-HAWB
  • Other 3rd parties, providing the possibility to send FWB/FHL : you can use an IT Solution Provider and use a system that meets your needs, including building and sending FWB and FHL messages. Several tools are available on the market.
  • Via your own IT system : your system may already have FWB and FHL functionnality. To find out if it is the case, you can contact your IT department. If this is not the case, your IT department may eventually develop this feature on your current system.


Step 3 : Receive the Activation Notice from AFLKLM

Once the customers's electronic datas are correct, the e-freight team activate you by sending an Activation Notice which will finalize our agreement. From this moment, you become an EDI customer with AFKLM.

Step 4: From now, send your FWB/FHL messages

Once you are activated in our systems as an EDI customer, you can send FWB/ FHL messages and deliver your shipments without MAWB/HAWB document paper. For destinations that may require a paper AWB for regulatory, operational or customs reasons, AFKL will print the paper AWB for you.

How to use e-AWB in your daily shipment

Step 1: Forwarder makes reservations with the Carrier

You can make your booking by phone or online (MyCargo or CPS). On the digital process the booking is mandatory before sending FWB/FHL messages.

Step 2: Forwarder sends FWB / XFWB

After having made your booking, you will send FWB / FHL messages. When you use e-AWBs, you never need to print a paper AWB. The e-AWB will update the operational systems of the airline. It will become the contract of carriage upon delivery of the cargo, when the airline sends the message Received From Shipper (RCS).

Step 3: Forwarder will receive FMA or FNA

The FMA is an acknowledgment message from AFKL, sent to the sender of the FWB/FHL. It means that AFKL has received your message in its system. Then, you can deliver your goods to AFKL. (If you want to receive an acknowledge of receipt through FMA message, please contact our e-freight service. ) The FNA is a rejection message from AFKL system. It indicates a syntax/content error of the FWB/FHLmessage. You need to correct/modify the FWB/FHL and send it back. The error message specifies the segment name (example: RTD) and describes the error (example: Invalid or missing rate description details - AWB rate line number).

Step 4: Forwarder tenders the shipment

Once you sent correctly your datas and you received back an acknowledgment, then you can tender the shipment physically. You are able to modify your FWB/ FHL messages until the good acceptance.

Step 5: Shipment is accepted

When documentary and physical acceptance are done and validated, then the airline sends the RCS.
